The rolled‑steel monobloc wheel consists of three parts: rim, web and hub. Located at the centre of the wheel, the hub is fitted onto the axle by interference press‑fit, transmitting loads from the car body to the axle. While routine maintenance tends to focus more on tread wear, hub cracks and hub loosening represent safety hazards with strong concealment. Full‑process control throughout manufacturing and in‑service maintenance is therefore required.

Structural Materials and Manufacturing Processes of the Hub

The hub is a thickened cylindrical structure at the centre with a high‑precision hub bore. The transition fillet where the hub joins the web is a site of stress concentration. As rolled‑steel monobloc wheels are integrally forged and rolled, the hub, rim and web are formed from a single raw blank without separate machining. Heat‑treatment for wheels adopts local quenching only on the rim tread. The hub retains favourable toughness to resist alternating impact loads.

Hub blanks are produced by forging and punching, followed by precision boring of the inner bore. Strict controls are imposed on bore diameter, cylindricity and surface roughness; noticeable tool marks on the inner bore are not permitted. After machining, ultrasonic testing and magnetic particle testing are performed on both the hub body and transition fillets. The wheel is cleared for wheelset assembly only after passing inspection.

Hydraulic Interference Fitting between Hub and Axle

Railway wheelsets adopt cold hydraulic press‑fitting instead of shrink‑fitting. With a properly selected interference value, the hub clamps tightly onto the axle wheel seat, and operating loads are transmitted via friction on the contact surface. Pressure‑displacement curves are recorded in real‑time during pressing. A smooth press‑fit curve without abrupt changes serves as a key acceptance criterion for qualified assembly.

Interference value selection is critical. Insufficient interference may lead to hub loosening under vehicle vibration and impact. Excessive interference generates high assembly stress on the inner wall, which tends to induce radial cracking of the hub. Assembly operations must strictly comply with relevant technical standards for wheelset assembly.

Major Hub Failure Modes

In‑service hub failures fall mainly into the following categories: inner‑wall scoring and scratching caused by press‑fitting or slippage, where scratches become stress initiation sources; fatigue cracks originating at the hub‑web transition fillets; slippage and loosening between hub and axle; propagation of pre‑existing metallurgical defects into internal cracks under alternating loads. Hub loosening is classified as a severe fault. The wheel shall be immediately removed from the axle once this condition is detected.

Non‑Destructive Testing for Hubs

Hub non‑destructive testing covers both new‑manufacture inspection and maintenance inspection. Ultrasonic testing detects embedded internal cracks within the hub and in transition fillet zones; magnetic particle testing focuses on screening surface and near‑surface micro‑cracks on hub end faces and transition fillets. Demagnetization must be completed after magnetic particle inspection.

Under‑wheel lathe turning can only repair wheel treads and cannot detect internal hub damage. After wheelsets are dismounted during depot‑level maintenance, visual inspection plus eddy‑current re‑inspection of the inner bore shall be performed to check for inner‑wall scratches and open cracks.

Operation, Maintenance and Management of Hubs

Train inspection crews mainly carry out visual examination of hub end faces. This only enables preliminary identification of traces indicating hub loosening and cannot replace professional non‑destructive testing. Complete ultrasonic and magnetic particle testing shall be conducted for hubs after wheelset disassembly at depot maintenance. Hubs with cracks exceeding allowable limits shall be scrapped directly; grinding for continued service is prohibited.

Wheelset lifecycle records shall be properly managed, and press‑fit curves together with assembly documentation shall be retained. After wheel removal from the axle, the hub inner bore shall be carefully inspected. Any hub exhibiting scoring or deformation shall be scrapped and shall not be reused for subsequent press‑fitting.

Conclusion

The hub acts as the key force‑transferring component of a wheelset. To guarantee safe hub operation, microstructure and machining accuracy shall be secured during forging‑rolling manufacture; appropriate interference values shall be maintained and press‑fit curves monitored at the assembly stage; dedicated non‑destructive testing shall be implemented in operation and maintenance. Multi‑link comprehensive control helps reduce hub cracks and hub‑loosening faults so as to ensure running safety for railway rolling stock.
